In some respects, public opinion of TASER products has been tainted by negative reporting related to unfair law enforcement practices and accidental death – which, in reality, is extremely rare and many times, unsubstantiated. One report shows that with over 500,000 TASERs in use by law enforcement agencies, there have been only 150 deaths worldwide since 2002. (In many of those cases, it is disputed as to whether the TASER was in fact the cause of death.)
The truth is that when it comes to personal and home defense, the TASER is an ideal choice for many reasons:
For one, TASERs are a non-lethal alternative to hand guns. The tragic accidental fatalities linked to handgun ownership – especially in relation to children – are a strong argument against owning a handgun. Yet, in today’s society, there is an ever-increasing need to arm and protect our homes and families against violent predators. TASERs offer effective self-defense without fear of a fatal counter-attack. But make no mistake, TASER effects are powerful. In fact, TASER, Inc. shares police statistics that the TASER C2 impact is more effective than a 9mm handgun.
TASERs are affordable and extremely easy to use, requiring minimal training. While law enforcement officers are governed by operational guidelines, as a homeowner acting in self-defense, you are within your rights to operate your TASER defense device under your own discretion. This means simply, if you’re in fear for your life, prolonged voltage transfer will afford you and your loved ones more time to get to safety while the predator lies immobilized.
How Do TASERs Work?
The TASER (acronym for Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle) was invented in 1974 for NASA researcher, Jack Glover. TASERs actually shoot darts, or probes, which can penetrate up to 2 inches of fabric and subsequently puncture the attacker’s skin. Darts are connected to insulate wires that are 15 feet long (4.5 meters). Each wire carries 50,000 volts of electricity. The direct, sub- skin contact is considerably more effective in delivering the kind of jolt necessary to completely incapacitate your attacker. All sensory and motor functions of the central nervous system are completely disrupted.
Most would-be predators will fall to the ground in a state of temporary paralysis. The longer the TASER “trigger” is depressed, the more voltage transfer and the greater disarming effects on the attacker. TASER self-defense devices allow you to stop an attacker from a safe distance. Different models fire at a range of 15-30 feet. TASERs can also operate in “Stun” mode and used as regular stun guns. This defense requires closer contact but is an excellent option to have during a surprise attack.
